10U-18U Spring Select Program

Overview

The Northern Virginia Hockey Club (“NoVA”) is expanding our Spring Hockey offerings. Beginning this year, we plan to organize multiple Select Teams at the 10U, 12U, 14U, and 16U-18U Age Divisions. The qualifying birth years within this Program are 2002-2011.

The NoVA Spring Select Program will:

  • Provide twelve 75-minute practices for 10U-14U, eight 60-minute full ice practices for 16-18U, as well as participation in two tournaments;

  • Maintain – and build upon(!) - player improvements made during the previous season, solidifying the highest level of play for all of our skaters;

  • Accelerate the integration of ‘new’ players aging up at the completion of the 19/20 winter season, introducing rules, concepts, and teammates as early as possible;

  • Offer an opportunity for players and parents to learn more about the NoVA Travel program;

  • Provide a strong ‘off-season’ foundation, including off-ice maintenance, which will carry over the summer and raise our level of preparation for the 20/21 winter season.

Give every skater the opportunity to continue playing the sport they love!

Our 10U-14U Select Teams will participate in the CCM Showdown Tournament hosted at Prince William Ice Arena in Woodbridge, VA from May 1-3 for 10U and 12U and May 8-10 for 14U. In addition to supporting this local tournament, elements of our NoVA Select teams - including our 16-18Us - will travel to Philadelphia over Memorial Day Weekend to participate in the IceWorks Memorial Day Tournament. Players will receive a NoVA Selects tournament jersey and socks as part of their program fee.

To prepare for these tournaments (and continue our goal of total player development), the Select teams will also have 12 (10U-14U) or eight (16-18U) practice sessions each. All practice sessions will be conducted at Mount Vernon Ice Rink. These sessions will run from mid-March to mid-May.

Tryouts for the NoVA Spring Selects will take place during the first week of March. Each age group will participate in two tryout sessions that will include goalie evaluations.

Program Structure

Who: This Program is open to boys & girls born 2002-2011. Team size will be aligned with USA Hockey ADM recommendations and the specific number of teams per age group will be determined after tryouts are complete. Each team will select 2-3 goalies during tryouts. 10U goalies will also skate out as players when not in goal. Coaches at 12U and up will decide if goalies will also skate out as players.

What: The NoVA Spring Select Program will be run in a manner similar to the CBHL Winter Travel programs. Practices will be a mixture of small area games, basic skill development stations, and team/individual tactics. Off-ice training will be scheduled either in conjunction with on-ice practices or as separate sessions. The specific practice mix will follow USA Hockey ADM guidelines and is designed to maximize each player’s development opportunities and puck touches. Wolfe Hockey will also provide goalie training for half of the practice sessions (six for 10U-14U, four for 16-18U). Age groups will follow USA Hockey birth year guidelines for the 2020-21 season.

Additional Details, Costs and Registration Link

Tryout Details: Tryout times and dates are listed above under “schedule.” Multiple age groups will be on the ice for each tryout but will be broken into separate evaluation groups and evaluated by coaches associated with their own age group. Tryouts will consist of individual skill drills, small area games, and some scrimmages. Players interested in trying out as a goalie will be provided with more details by their age group lead coach prior to tryouts. Players must attend tryouts to be selected for any of the Select Teams. Parents of players who can’t attend both sessions should indicate this during registration. Age group lead coaches will reach out to discuss your player's individual situation.

Practices: Will be run by current NoVA travel coaches who have been certified by USAH and will follow USAH ADM guidelines. Practices will be broken into Small Area Games, Skill Development Stations, and Team/Individual Tactics Stations. The mix and content of stations will be determined by the team coaches and based upon USA Hockey ADM guidelines. Goalies will receive training from a Wolfe Goalie Instructor for 6 of the 12 practices (10U-14U) and 4 of the 8 practices (16-18U).

Goalies: Parents must indicate during registration for tryouts if their player is interested in trying out for goalie. The number of goalies selected for each age group and team will be at the coach’s discretion and based on a number of factors specific to each age group. More details on the specifics of goalie tryouts will be provided by the age group lead coach prior to the week of tryouts. NoVA has limited Club gear to support 10U and some 12U goalies who don’t have their own. Goalies at 14U and older must provide their own gear. 10U and 12U parents: please indicate if your player needs goalie gear for tryouts when completing your tryout registration.

Tournaments: Tournament uniforms and tournament entry fees for the CCM Showdown are covered in the Selects overall program fee. Lodging for the Philadelphia tournament will be a separate expense. Players and their families must stay in the hotels provided by the tournament organizers. Lodging will be coordinated by the Team Manager for each Select Team. Age Group-specific items are further listed below:

  • 10U-14U: Tournament entry fees for the CCM Showdown are covered in the Selects overall program fee of $450. Players will be expected to attend this tournament. Parents should also indicate during team registration if their player will be available to attend the Memorial Day tournament in Philadelphia. Player availability will determine how many teams we register for the Philadelphia tournament and team roster sizes. This will also determine the cost per player for the second tournament

  • 16-18U: Tournament entry fees for the Memorial Day tournament in Philadelphia will be included in the Selects overall program fee of $450. Parents should also indicate during team registration if their player is interested in attending an additional spring tournament after Memorial Day. Player availability will determine if this 16-18U Selects team attends a second tournament as well as determining the cost per player of the second tournament

Cost: $40 to register for and participate in tryouts. $450/player for those chosen for a Select team (this covers the cost of 12 practices (10U-14U) or 8 practices (16-18U), tournament fees for one tournament, and a Spring Selects tournament jersey with socks). Additional tournament fees for the second tournament and lodging for tournaments are not included in the $450 fee.

Registration: Initial registration will be for tryouts only. Players must be a member of USA Hockey for the 2019-2020 season and provide their membership number at tryout registration. Full equipment is required for all tryouts, practices, and tournaments.
