The NoVA Ice Dogs are a family organization whose mission is providing a quality hockey program for boys and girls ages 4-18. We are committed to providing an opportunity to learn and play the game of ice hockey in an environment of equal participation and competitiveness while promoting good sportsmanship and team play.
What does it mean to be on a NoVA Youth Travel Team?
What Age Division should my child try out for?
USA Hockey uses your child’s birth year to determine what Age Division a player should participate in. In the 2018- 2019 season, players will be placed in the following Age Divisions:
The NoVA Ice Dogs work to maximize the potential of all players so we place the right number of players on a team. We have set a minimum and maximum roster size for team in each Age Division. Our optimal goal is to roster 3 teams per Age Division but we will always strive to provide no less than two teams per Age Division (all based on tryout registrations and player evaluations at tryouts.)
2018-2019 Average number of Players + Goalies (G) per Team:
|8-12 + 1(G)||13-16 + 2(G)||13-16 + 2(G)||16-18 + 2(G)||16-18 + 2(G)||15-18 + 2(G)|
Tryouts will be held May 5-13, 2018 at the Mt Vernon Ice Rink. Please be sure to check out the schedule for dates and times for your player’s Age Division. All players and goalies are required to attend all tryout sessions for their respective Age Division.
***Supplemental tryouts will be held at 14U, 16U and 18U in conjunction with goalie specific evaluations. The Age Division Lead Coach(es) will ask specific players to attend this extra assessments.***
Registration will open on April 1st. All players will need their 2018-2019 USA Hockey Number for the 2018-2019 Hockey Season in order to register. Registration for tryouts will close at midnight on May 2.
***No Walk-on's allowed*** You must be pre-registered***
Teams will be fielded at 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U. The number of teams and level of play is subject to the number and quality of the selected players. The intent is to field AA teams at various levels.
Tryouts at each Age Division will consist of 2 or 3 tryout dates. Players and Goalies are required to attend all sessions to ensure each candidate has exposure to the evaluation team. Goalies will participate in a separate evaluation period that will be conducted during the specified time frame.
Teams Level of play will be determined after the completion of tryouts (AA, UA, LA, B designations will be submitted to the Travel Director for submission to the CBHL by the NoVA Board).
Lead Coaches will conduct the evaluations with the administrative assistance of the Evaluators, Age Representatives and Assistant Coaches. Head Coaches will finalize their rosters with the Travel Director. Each player will be notified via email of their selection and validation of their acceptance. If the player does not accept the offer to play on the specified NoVA Ice Dog team, the Club has the option to pull up another player in their place to fill the vacant slot. There will also be a Supplemental tryouts in June and August/September.
The NoVA Hockey Club fully supports travel teams playing in a myriad of tournaments and realizes that in some instances the price can be another burden on the families. Teams will participate in a minimum of 3 tournaments and which includes a pre-season tournament. The NoVA Board supports teams to register for the following tournaments locations: Virginia, DC, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and North & South Carolina. In addition, teams may attend tournaments farther away, such as New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, Illinois or even Canada (International Silver Sticks) if the team parents vote to attend.
There will be a "Team/Tourney Fee" established by each individual team. All rostered players are expected to pay their equal percentage of this fee regardless of their participation is specific Tourneys or Events.
Goalies are required to attend all tryout sessions for their respective age group in addition to their goalie specific evaluation.
Age Division Lead Coaches have been named and these individuals will conduct tryouts at each Age Division. They will coordinate with the other coaches at that Age Division to ensure optimal improvement, consistent messaging and coordinated focus. Lower team head and assistant coaches have been identified, but not yet finalized.
