Evaluations on June 12th and 13th

Preliminary evaluation sessions on June 12th and 13th will run from 10am – 11am on both days at Mount Vernon RECenter.

    • Player and spectators are required to wear a mask at all times inside the building.
    • Players are encouraged to dress at home or outside to minimize the number of bodies in the dressing rooms, which have capacity caps to ensure social distancing.
    • Up to 50 spectators will be allowed in the stands, taking care to wear a mask and spread out.
    • We will keep these sessions relatively informal – it will look and feel like a practice with skating, drills, and games, so that our coaches can get a sense of each player’s skill level.
      • Teams will not be selected at this time – we will formally organize into teams at the end of the summer.
    • If you have not yet registered for the June sessions, please do so at https://www.nova-icedogs.org/page/show/241014-program-registration.

If you have any questions, please contact 8U Director Ben Marter at ben.marter@novaicedogs.org or at 303-718-9864.

    2021-2022 Season

    Parents,

As part of our Club’s return to hockey plan for the 21/22 Fall and Winter season, we intend to field at least one coed 8U travel (CBHL) team along with our internal 8U house program (that includes cross or half-ice games played at Mount Vernon with the opportunity to participate in house jamborees hosted by other clubs in the area).

Unlike in seasons past when NOVA’s 8U evaluations and travel tryouts were conducted solely in September, we will hold initial 8U evaluation sessions on June 12th and 13th at Mount Vernon ice arena. We will hold additional sessions in August and September to formally organize into teams.

If you are interested in joining the house or travel program in the fall, we encourage you to participate in the June sessions.

Registration for the June sessions is now open at https://www.nova-icedogs.org/page/show/241014-program-registration. Please note: your player will need a new (21/22) USA Hockey number to register. You can register with USA Hockey here (link). The sessions will cost $75.

We will use the number of registrations at each age group to solidify our planning for the season and determine how many travel and house teams the Club can field. We will use USA Hockey ADM guidance when determining the minimum number of players required for a team (link to guidance).

More information on the NOVA House Program:

Player Birth Years: Players born in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Location: All practices and games are held at the Mt Vernon Ice Rink / 2017 Belle View Blvd, Alexandria, VA 22307.

Structure: The NOVA 8U House Program is a Weekend Modal Program with all practices and games held on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Practices: 2 ice slots per weekend for 24 weeks beginning in August 2020. Anticipate all practices occurring on Saturday morning and every other Sunday (alternating with the games listed below).

Games: Anticipate all games being played every other Sunday morning.

Season: August 2020 through February 2021.

Prerequisite: Participation in the Club's 2019-2020 NoVA 8U Hockey Program, the 2020-2021 Skills and Drills programs, our Learn to Play Program or an equivalent Learn to Play Program.

More information on the NOVA Travel Program:

As in seasons past, the players on NOVA's 8U Travel teams also register to play in the Club’s 8U House Program. Participation in the House Program substantially reduces the overall cost of both the House and Travel programs while providing travel players with more ice touches than any other 8U program in the area. House practices and games take place Saturday and Sunday mornings (specific times to be determined) at Mount Vernon Ice Arena.

Chad Haferbier, a USA Hockey level 5-certified coach who served as our 8U B Travel coach during the 19/20 season, will once again serve as head coach for our first 8U team - with additional coaches to be identified later if we have enough players for additional teams.

    Travel Practices:

The NOVA 8U Travel teams practice once a week (day and time TBD) at Mount Vernon Ice Arena.

    CBHL Games:

The CBHL has adopted a Jamboree-style format for league play. Each representative club will host a Jamboree where each attending team will play multiple half-ice games. These Jamborees will be scheduled on either a Saturday or Sunday beginning no earlier than November 1 and ending no later than January 31.

    Exhibition Games:

Our 8U travel teams will play in games against other regional teams starting in mid-September. These games will also take place on Saturday and Sunday. They may be home games (played at Mount Vernon) or away (played at the home rink of our opponents). These games will supplement the CBHL jamboree schedule.

    Tournaments:

If the team wishes to participate in tournaments (either in our out of the region), they are free to do so as long as the tournaments are USA Hockey sanctioned and comply with any CBHL guidance provided at the start of the season. The costs of tournaments (both tournament fees and travel/hotel costs) will not be included in the regular travel season fees. The team coach and manager will coordinate with parents to determine the number and location of tournaments played by the team.

    Player Expectations:

Unless a NoVA 8U Travel team event is in direct conflict with either an 8U NoVA House practice or an 8U NoVA House game, all NoVA 8U Travel players are expected to attend their respective NoVA 8U House events. It is the intent of the Club and the 8U NoVA Travel Coach to minimize conflicts with the NoVA 8U House Program.

Our goal is to simplify the program and make it easier for parents and players to get to practices and games.

If you have any questions about either the travel or house program, please contact NOVA 8U Director Ben Marter at 303-718-9864 or email ben.marter@novaicedogs.com

We look forward to seeing you at the rink!
