(Pittsburgh, PA) On a brisk, chilly weekend the NoVA 14Bs headed to Pittsburgh for the Mid-Winter Classic tournament (Jan 12-15, 2018).
The first game on Friday afternoon saw the NoVA face a strong Athens Bobcats (OH) team, for a 2-2 tie. In the next game on Friday evening the NoVA 14s faced the South Hill Panthers (PA). The battle with the Panthers went back and forth, and at the end of the game our 14Bs came out victorious with a 3-0 shutout. On Saturday morning, NoVA faced the Parma Flyers (OH), and prevailed 6-3 after a tough battle. The NoVA 14Bs finished the round-robin part of the tournament in 1st place with a 2-0-1 overall record, and headed to the finals.
The championship game on Sunday morning pitted NoVA against the South Hill Panthers. The South Hill Panthers came determined to win the game, and opened the score in the first period. NoVA 14s did not give up and fought back, taking control of the game and of the puck. Two goals in the second period allowed 14Bs to go ahead, while limiting the opponent’s ability to get to goal. The third period opened with another quick goal by the NoVA, but the South Hill Panthers did not give up and continued to press. With a little over two minutes to go in the game, a penalty was called on on NoVA. On the power play, South Hill pressed hard, pulled their goalie, and had six skaters on the ice to push for a goal. But the NoVA 14Bs team was ready for the challenge and prevailed, holding off the Panthers and capturing the Bantam B3 Division Championship.
