NoVA 14U Blue ended a memorable season as champions, winning the 2019-2020 Joe Loschiavo Memorial Cup 14U Division I Tournament held in Frederick, MD over February 29 and March 1.

During the Capital Corridor Hockey League (CCHL) regular season, NoVA Blue earned a 8-1-3 (71GF 30GA) record, with its sole loss to NoVA Red and two ties against NoVA White. Together NoVA Red, Blue and White finished the CCHL regular season first, second and third, respectively, to represent the CCHL 14U Southern Conference in the CCHL Division I Tournament.

At the tournament in round robin play, NoVA Blue faced the top three qualifiers from the Northern Conference: the league’s top defense, Easton White; the league’s top offense, Howard Navy; and scrappy Baltimore Green. NoVA Blue played hard and earned a berth in the elimination round as the fourth seed with a 1-1-1 (6GF 7GA) record and 13 points under Buffalo Scoring System.

In the semi-finals, NoVA Blue put forth its best game of the entire year in a back-and-forth rematch against NoVA Red for a hard fought 2-1 victory. In the first period, Blue scored first from a strong side deflection sent from the point, and Red responded immediately with a powerful drive from the ensuing face-off. Midway into the second period, Blue went ahead with a well-placed backhander along the ice to just inside the far post. Both goalies played exceptionally well stopping all shots near and far for the balance of the game.

In the finals, NoVA Blue pounced on Howard Navy gaining a 4-1 lead by the second intermission. Howard Navy responded unconventionally by pulling the goalie and applying incredible offensive pressure for nearly the entirety of the final fifteen minutes, but in the end, the scoreboard showed 5-4 in favor of NoVA Blue. Champions!

Throughout the tournament, NoVA Blue was led by elite defenseman and team captain, Rodrigo Mattioli; indefatigable center and alternate captain, Liam Chmura; explosive forward and alternate captain, Noah Gizzarelli; potent scorer, Vincent Cirenza; and outstanding net minder, Brendan Short.

NoVA 14U Blue was a very young team, comprised of just three second year bantams (1) and eleven first years (2), including a first time player (3) and a core group (4) who have had tremendous success playing together over the past four CCHL seasons, tallying three Southern Conference championships, two Division I championships and one as finalist, for a combined record of (52-6-8).
