FORT DUPONT ICE ARENA HOSTS HOCKEY MARATHON; PROCEEDS TOWARDS FUNDRAISING GOAL FOR NEW 2-RINK FACILITY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CITY
Washington, DC — Hockey enthusiasts will take to the ice Sunday, March 17, at DC’s Fort Dupont Ice Arena (FDAI), in a 12-hour Marathon Hockey Game to raise funds for the new facility. The public is invited to cheer on their favorite team or players starting at 8:00am.
The annual event highlights broad support from all corners of the District for the capital city’s only indoor, full size ice rink, overseen by the nonprofit Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena (FFD). Last month, FFD reached an agreement with the District of Columbia to move forward with a joint project to build a new 2-rink arena on the same Southeast DC site, putting the long time dream of an expanded facility to serve thousands more area children on a clear, if steep, path to becoming a reality. The City will award a construction contract and allocate about $25 million for the project after FFD raises $3 million.
Fort Dupont’s KOI program gives Washington’s children unparalleled opportunities to enjoy ice sports, regardless of their economic circumstances, by offering free or heavily subsidized, high quality instruction to thousands of area kids in basic skating (Learn To Skate), ice hockey, speed skating, figure skating, and synchronized (team) skating. DC public school classes also can skate for free, and the Arena is home ice for several well-known school hockey teams, including Gonzaga and St. Albans.
